The plains of Brie witnessed the first stages of the Battle of the Marne, which lasted from 5 to 12 September 1914.
Since the outbreak of war in August, the German army had crossed Belgium and was pursuing the retreating French armies and British expeditionary force.
Paris was only 40 kilometres away! But history took a different course... The "Miracle of the Marne" ensued.
